Almost a year to the day after the #MeToo movement upended Hollywood it has arrived in the world’s biggest film industry, Bollywood, and is spreading through India. Several women have bravely shared their ordeal of how they suffered sexual harassment at the hands of powerful men and co-workers. Many well-known comedians, journalists and actors have been named and shamed on social media in the past few days as allegations of sexual misconduct against them, continue to tumble out.
Somehow I feel this #MeToo movement will bring about a positive change that will make the workplace a safer place. As people no more afraid to share about there stories.
Though it may seem that workplace harassment cases are on a rise in past few years, that’s not really true. They have been happening for a long time.
In the absence of an internal system, women are now seeking help outside. They know they have the support and their voice is being heard. Now days It’s not only happening with women’s it also happens with men’s.
Important thing is safety, how we can make our workplace safe for us. How we can fight with monsters out there:
- Come to terms with reality. It can happen in any workplace. A perpetrator can be someone you know or a complete stranger. So by creating awareness about safety is crucial at any workplace. Conducting sessions is a great way to spread awareness.Organizations can also educate people.
- Parents teach young kids who are entering into professional world how to deal with such environment. Guide them and give them belief that you are always with them. We should make our kids mentally strong so that they can fight with monsters. As parents it’s our duty to guide our kids how to give respect to all human beings. If base of all kids will be strong then I feel World will be much better place.
- By paying closer attention to unusual or suspicious behavior and challenging it, you can reconfigure the odds. Don’t be afraid to inquire or report, and make sure you’re people aren’t afraid either.
- Even in the absence of an HR department, what shouldn’t be missing is a strict sexual harassment policy. There’s an abundance of workplace harassment policies online. All you need to do is look for it. Refer to those and make your own with the guidance of relevant people. Get expert advice.
- Consider providing a basic self-defense and safety course to all employees. It’s an employee perk that will not only be appreciated, but could potentially save lives.
There is no doubt about the fact that many organisations try their best in keeping their female employees safe. Nonetheless, the responsibility they shoulder is so big that corporate measures alone won’t suffice. What is really required is a commitment from our state and city governments to invest in public spaces, and a better understanding from architects and builders too on how work places can be built in a manner more conducive to safety. Commitment from parents to teach kids how to stay in society without harming others. And most important don’t stay quiet, raise your voice whenever you feel it’s required. Believe in your intuition.
